A Tale of Transformation

This setting uses 2 old Scottish tunes to paint a portrait of personal growth. The first piece “Mary young and fair” represents a young Mary, living in innocence as a youth. The second piece “rowing from Isla to Uist” represents Mary’s journey through life, with the analogy of rough seas and wind as life’s obstacles to overcome. The next piece is a reprise of “Mary young and fair” but this time it is altered in mode and feeling to represent the gained wisdom of older age and experience.   Both songs are treated with respect to the original notation with liberties taken mostly in the final recap. All players have a rich offering of solo spots and prominent counterpoint.   The harp part is energetic at times, but comfortably written.
